Through Adam’s sin, man has been separated from God. Christ had to pay that price of our sin; he did this because He loved us as our Heavenly Father loved us. Not only did Christ’s atonement paid for our sins, but also it made it easier for us to go to our Heavenly Father for prayer.
One of my favorite stories is about the Temple and its veil being torn in half. During the lifetime of Jesus, the holy temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life. The temple was the place where animal sacrifices were carried out and worship according to the Law of Moses was followed faithfully. There was three parts of the Temple: the Outer Court, the Inner Court and the Holy of Holies. In Hebrews 9, it tells us that in the temple there was a veil that separated the Holy of Holies. The Holy of Holies symbolizes God’s earthly dwelling here on earth and the veil symbolized the separation of man due to his sinful nature. In Isaiah 59: 1-2 it says “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.” Until Christ’s death, only the high priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil once each year to enter into God's presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins. This was yearly sacrifice that had to be repeated each following year. Another words it was temporary fix.
The veil was about 60 feet high and it was four inches thick. The size and thickness of the veil makes the events occurring at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross so much more momentous. “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” Matthew 27: 50-51a. Because of Jesus dieing on the cross and shedding his blood, we do not need a High Priest to go into the Holy of Holies; we now can enter the Holy of Holies by blood of the lamb. In a sense, the veil was symbolic of Christ Himself as the only way to the Father. John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Our Heavenly Father has made it easier for us to come into His presence and seek His face. He wants us to spend time with, so that we can know His ways. In 3 Nephi 18:17 – 19, it says, “Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name; And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.”
We now pray whenever we feel the need to converse with our Heavenly Father. We can pray silently or vocally so we can pour our hearts out to Him. Where ever were at, we pray to our Heavenly Father. He is waiting there for us as any good father to hear our concerns and desires. All He ask of us is pray “with a sincere heart and with real intent” (Moroni 10:4) When we pray to our Heavenly Father, we should tell him how we feel in our hearts, speak in confidence to Him, ask Him for forgiveness, beseech Him, thank Him and most of all express your love for Him. Also we should have the attitude that His will be done and not ours, because our desires may not be the best for us. Remember always to close our prayer in Jesus’ name.
